Choosing The Right Stain For Your North Carolina Log Home

A general rule of thumb when choosing a stain for your log home or timber frame structure is the richer the pigment  the more protection it offers your home.  With today's technology and the creation of transoxide and nano pigments your logs can get great protection from the sun and still have full transparency highlighting all the grain of the wood.

The pigment in stains acts as a sunscreen for your wood.  It prevents the wood from deteriorating from the harmful UV rays of the sun.  The sealer part of the stain prevents water from entering the wood, thus preventing rot.  The water will either roll right off of the wood or bead up and eventually evaporate.  We have tested numerous stains over the years and know them inside and out.   We use only stains with the finest pigments and best mildew resistance that money can buy.  Which is one of the many reasons we don't use stains that come from local paint suppliers and big box stores.  Whichever stain color you end up choosing it's important you only use products that were designed and intended only for use on logs.

When you choose to WoodTeks LLC to sand and stain your log home or timber frame structure we'll discuss your staining options and help you make the right decision for your log home.

Our Log Home Staining Process

A high-quality staining job requires a detailed and specific process

#1.  Inspection and Assessment:

The first step involves a thorough inspection of the log home's exterior to assess the condition of the current stain, identify areas of damage or wear, and determine the scope of the necessary work.

#2.  Preparation of the Work Area:

This includes setting up scaffolding if needed, covering the ground and vegetation around the home to protect from debris and chemicals, and gathering all necessary equipment and materials.

#3.  Exterior Trim and Fixture Removal:

Remove or cover exterior features such as lights, doors, windows, and trim to prevent damage during the staining process. This step ensures that only the logs are exposed and treated.

#4.  Surface Cleaning:

The entire exterior surface is cleaned to remove dirt, grime, and old stain. This can be achieved through power washing or hand washing, depending on the condition of the wood and the type of stain previously used.

#5.  Media Blasting:

For homes needing more extensive preparation, media blasting (using materials like corn cob, glass bead, or walnut shell) is employed to gently remove the old finish, mold, mildew, and grayed wood, revealing a fresh layer beneath.

#6.  Repairing Surface Blemishes:

After cleaning, any cracks, checks, or blemishes on the wood surface are repaired. This may involve filling cracks with epoxy or wood filler and sanding down rough or raised areas to ensure a smooth surface for staining.

#7.  Applying Borate Treatment (if needed):

A borate treatment may be applied to the wood to protect against rot, fungi, and insects. This step is especially important for log homes in humid or insect-prone areas.

#8.  Stain Application:

Once the logs are clean, dry, and repaired, the new stain is applied. Professionals typically use a brush, roller, or sprayer to apply stain evenly, working in sections to maintain a wet edge and prevent lap marks. Multiple coats may be required, depending on the product specifications and desired finish.

#9.  Topcoat/Sealant Application:

After the stain has dried according to the manufacturer's instructions, a topcoat or sealant is applied to provide additional UV protection and water repellency. This step is crucial for extending the life of the stain and protecting the wood.

#10.  Exterior Trim and Fixture Replacement:

Once the stain and sealant are completely dry, all removed or covered exterior elements are replaced or uncovered, ensuring that the home's aesthetic is restored and enhanced by the fresh stain.

#11.  Final Inspection and Cleanup:

A final inspection is conducted to ensure the quality of the work and that no areas were missed. Cleanup involves removing all protective coverings, cleaning up any debris, and ensuring the property is left in pristine condition.

We recently purchased a log home built in the 80's that was not maintained properly. Jason and his crew replaced logs, media blasted to get rid of old, worn wood, sealed and stained the home. The home was much more efficient this winter and the logs look so refreshed with the new stain. Our home looks as close to new as it could thanks to WoodTeks.

We were looking for someone to strip and stain our log home and we came upon Woodteks. Jason and his crew did a fantastic job. They are very professional. We could not be more pleased with the final outcome. Jason met with us and explained the entire process completely. The logs were stripped and cleaned then our whole house was stained. We had a bad experience once before with a different company's stain crew but Jason's crew did a phenomenal job. No streaks or runs. Very happy that we found them! We would recommend them to anyone who is wanting a professional job and they cleaned up well. We absolutely love the final product.
